On the cover of Vogue Paris, its first transgender model
A first for a French fashion title: Brazilian trans beauty Valentina Sampaio
March 3, 2017
So when Vogue Paris does something, the fashion world pays attention.
The title has people buzzing over its March issue, where Brazilian transgender model Valentina Sampaio appears on the cover, along with the words “transgender beauty” (in French, of course).
Sampaio is now the first transgender model to appear on the cover of a French magazine.
A first for France, but not the world
She’s not the first transgender person to appear on the cover of a fashion magazine, however. Andreja Pejić appeared on Marie Claire Spain last year.
Sampaio was on the cover of Elle Brazil last October.
And while not a fashion magazine, Vanity Fair famously featured Caitlyn Jenner on its cover in June 2015.
In her editor’s note, Vogue Paris editor in chief Emmanuelle Alt writes, “Beyond her evident physical qualities and her sparkling personality, [Sampaio] embodies a long and painful fight against being perceived as a ‘gender exile.'”
As The New York Times notes, the move comes at an interesting time for the trans community. Donald Trump recently reversed federal policy that protected some rights of trans students.
And France itself is in the midst of a presidential campaign where trans rights have been at issue.
