Is ‘Missing Richard Simmons’ the next ‘Serial’?
February 22, 2017
It started as a simple question: Is Richard Simmons okay?
The fitness guru, who taught a nation to sweat to the oldies, went out of public view a few years ago. Since then, the gregarious Simmons has been the subject of so many rumors, it’s difficult to keep track of them.
Some claimed he was transitioning genders. Others said he was being kept hostage by an unscrupulous housekeeper or business associate.
Dan Taberski, a friend of Simmons who took classes at his Beverly Hills studio, decided to get to the bottom of the Simmons situation.
He launched a new podcast, from First Look Media, called “Missing Richard Simmons.”
It explores the star’s disappearance and how he inspired so many to lose weight, Taberski included. In fact, the former “Daily Show with Jon Stewart” writer had attempted to make a documentary about Simmons, who agreed but then pulled his disappearing act.
Apparently Taberski isn’t the only one missing him. “Missing Richard Simmons” has become the hottest podcast around since its launch earlier this month, ranking No. 1 overall on the iTunes charts.
It’s ahead of such NPR staples as “TED Talks” and “This American Life.”
Is it the next “Serial?” It’s too early to say for sure, but it’s certainly worth keeping an eye on.
